Connections That Count: It’s Impact on Our School Experience and Personal Development

By- Simone Lhanzome Subba

People often claim that connections formed at school are fleeting and insignificant, but I couldn’t disagree more. I believe that it is these relationships that helped shape our personalities and that will ultimately guide us as we take our first steps towards adulthood and the intimidating world, we are yet to discover.

During these past 14 years as a DPS Dubai student I had the privilege of forming lifelong friendships and learning from the best and most supporting teachers. I strongly believe that it was their presence that made school life enjoyable and interesting. I was always challenged by my peers and teachers to strive towards perfection, which definitely helped me work hard to achieve my goals. From my friends I understood the significance of friendships in our lives and how it can serve as a source of motivation, especially in this faced paced world, where it can be easy to feel lonely and isolated. Every now and then, when the weight of tasks and exams became difficult to bear, the reassuring presence of my peers lifted my spirits and inspired me to strive on.

My teachers constantly gave me opportunities to develop and exercise my leadership and critical thinking skills through class discussions, science exhibitions, and public speaking competitions. I am convinced that my interest in learning new concepts was rooted by my supporting teachers who always found ways to make learning enjoyable and interactive. Last but certainly not the least, both my peers and my teachers imparted to me the invaluable lesson of learning from failures and moving forward, embodying Albert Einstein’s wise words that “Failure is success in progress.” It was truly because of their unwavering support and guidance that I have achieved what I have so far.

As I look back on my school years, I am filled with a sense of thankfulness for the friendships and connections that have enriched my life in countless ways. I will forever be indebted to my teachers who have bestowed upon me great wisdom and knowledge and to my peers for giving me abundant joy and laughter. These values and bonds have served as catalysts for my personal growth and will be carried into the future with much gratitude and appreciation.
