ADVICE TO THE FUTURE STUDENTS AT DPS DUBAI

– Kripa Krishnakumar

Delhi Private School Dubai, my second home that fostered me for about 12 years. A place of beautiful and heart-touching memories. Its walls roaring with the laughter and joy of students that roam the halls now and that of students that no longer go there. Having spent well over half my life in this institution, my words of praise never end. As a student, waking up early in the morning, finishing my homework, packing my bag the night before all seemed like the most tedious tasks, my body used to ache just by the thought of it. As a recent graduate, I couldn’t want anything more than to do these tasks one more time.

DPS, as a school itself was my tutor in many ways. The values and lessons I learnt sitting in my classroom, or walking in the greenfield, I could not have learnt from anywhere else. And no one deserves more credit for being guides and mentors than my teachers and friends. I would be lying if I said that I reached where I am now without the help of my teachers, even from a young grade. To all the current DPSD students, the first and maybe one of the most significant pieces of advice I can provide is to make meaningful connections with people in the school. The teachers, faculty, students, ancillary staff, stop at no one. These connections you make now, even if they do not last long will be a prime part of your memory for years to come. It will be your pushing force throughout your school years too.

Academics and the complex curriculum are some things that our school has mastered. With the right heads for each department, and the best teaching techniques, I have come to understand that there is no better place to learn than at DPS. A mixture of this and the wide and ever-growing array of extra-curricular activities keep you equipped and almost fully ready to start your university journey too. Learn to use the opportunities that you are presented with and learn to embrace your strengths and weakness and to build your profile accordingly. Don’t take a step back and keep involvement in activities and clubs for later. It is precisely a skill I felt I lacked, but is an absolute key in coming a step closer to your goals. If you have talents, or interests of any sort, sow the seeds at a young age, cultivate it, and reap the rewards with the help of your parents’ and teachers’ guidance when you are older. Do not wait until someone pushes you to take part in an event. Have the courage and willingness to take it up on your own, within your own terms.

Plan ahead. As if an excess of twelve years at school aren’t enough, most students end up waiting until the last 6 months of their school years to make decisions about their future and about what they want to pursue. Take out some more timeout of your schedule to try to get to know yourself, because there is no better way to figure out what you are passionate about. Don’t jump on the bandwagon when choosing your subjects of choice or your career. These are some of the most important decisions you can make. Make sure that you are doing it out of your own interest and not the satisfaction of other. Resort to the help of the highly experienced teachers or counseling staff so you have a clear idea of where you are headed in life.

Lastly, but most importantly, fully enjoy this period of your life. School is probably going to be one of the most enriching and indulging parts of your life that you will always look back and reminisce about. There are a large number of students from different backgrounds and with different tastes at our school, so learn to find your group of friends that will have your back throughout your journey. There is nothing more fulfilling than spending time with the ones you love, teachers, friends and parents included.

This school is the foundation of who I am and what I have accomplished. And I’m sure this stands true for all the students that have graduated from here. And it will probably continue to be so for all the students that are to graduate from DPS in the future as well.
